The Functionalist Savoy Theatre right in the heart of Helsinki was completed in 1937. For 50 years, it was one of the biggest cinemas in Helsinki. In 1987, it became a stage for guest performances and is now administered by the Cultural Office.
The Savoy Theatre provides a stage for numerous Finnish and foreign artists. In addition, many events of the leading City festivals are arranged at the Savoy. Joint productions and the Cultural Office's own productions are also held there.
The Savoy Theatre has a 700-seat concert hall. Because of its acoustically functional hall, central location, and various technical facilities, the Savoy Theatre is an ideal place for concerts. Today the Savoy Theater is Helsinki's main venue for a selection of theatrical performances from domestic and international touring theatre groups. The program includes from contemporary to classical works, and the odd musical. So the Savoy Theatre attracts both local people and tourists as the place the place to see musical performances, high-quality plays, musicals and dance.
